How an Ice Dam Actually Forms

The cycle starts with heat escaping from the living space into the attic — through poorly sealed light fixtures, attic hatches, bath fans, or just insufficient insulation. That warm air heats the underside of the roof deck unevenly: warmer over the conditioned attic, colder over the unheated eaves and soffits that overhang outside walls.

Snow sitting on the warm section melts. The meltwater runs down the roof slope and hits the cold section near the eave, where outside air temperature keeps the deck below freezing. It refreezes there. Repeat that cycle over several freeze-thaw days and the ice ridge grows thicker, eventually damming water behind it that has nowhere to drain but sideways and upward, under the shingle laps.

Asphalt shingles are built to shed water running downhill, not water pooling and pushing uphill under gravity reversal. Once water backs up far enough, it finds a nail hole, a seam, or a flashing gap and works its way into the roof deck.

The damage from an ice dam rarely shows up where the ice actually is.
