Asphalt Shingle Roofing Guide for Colorado Springs Homeowners

Asphalt shingles cover roughly 80% of American homes, and for good reason -- they deliver solid performance at a price point that works for most budgets. But not all asphalt shingles are created equal, especially at 6,035 feet elevation where Colorado Springs homeowners deal with intense UV, frequent hail, and freeze-thaw cycles that test every roofing material.

This guide covers the types of asphalt shingles available, what matters most in our climate, and how to get the longest life out of your investment.

Asphalt Shingle Roofing: What Colorado Springs Homeowners Need to Know

Asphalt shingles have been the dominant residential roofing material since the 1950s. Modern versions are significantly better than what went on roofs even 15 years ago -- stronger adhesive strips, better granule adhesion, and impact-resistant options that can handle the hailstorms we see 3-5 times per year.

How Asphalt Shingles Are Made

Every asphalt shingle starts with a base mat (fiberglass or organic felt), coated with asphalt for waterproofing, and topped with ceramic-coated mineral granules. Those granules do three jobs:

  • Protect the asphalt layer from UV degradation (critical at our elevation where UV is 25% more intense)
  • Provide fire resistance (Class A rated)
  • Create the visible color and texture

When you see granules accumulating in your gutters, it means the shingles are losing their protective layer -- a sign that replacement is approaching.

Types of Asphalt Shingles

3-Tab Shingles

The original and most affordable asphalt shingle. Each strip has three uniform tabs that create a flat, repetitive appearance. 3-tab shingles carry 20-25 year warranties and cost $3.50-$5.00 per square foot installed in Colorado Springs (2025-2026 pricing).

Our take: We rarely recommend 3-tab for new installations. The cost difference between 3-tab and architectural is small ($0.75-$1.25/sq ft), but architectural shingles last significantly longer and handle wind and hail far better.

Architectural (Laminated) Shingles

Architectural shingles use two or more layers laminated together, creating a dimensional appearance that mimics wood shake or slate. They are heavier, more wind-resistant (rated 110-130 mph vs. 60-70 mph for 3-tab), and carry 30-50 year warranties.

Best options for Colorado Springs: Owens Corning Duration (our most-installed product), GAF Timberline HDZ, and CertainTeed Landmark. These products have proven track records at altitude.

Cost: $4.50-$6.50 per square foot installed.

Designer Shingles

Premium architectural shingles with enhanced aesthetics -- deeper shadow lines, larger profiles, and specialty color blends that closely replicate slate or cedar. Products like Owens Corning Berkshire and GAF Camelot fall in this category.

Cost: $6.00-$9.00 per square foot installed. Worth considering for high-visibility homes in neighborhoods like Broadmoor, Kissing Camels, or Flying Horse where curb appeal directly affects property value.

Impact-Resistant (Class 4) Shingles

This is the most important category for Colorado Springs homeowners. Class 4 shingles are engineered to withstand the impact of a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet -- simulating large hailstones. Products like Owens Corning Duration FLEX, GAF Armor Shield II, and Malarkey Vista AR use modified SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) asphalt that flexes on impact instead of cracking.

Why Class 4 matters here: Colorado Springs averages 3-5 significant hailstorms per year. A standard roof might need replacement every 8-12 years due to hail damage. A Class 4 roof can survive multiple hailstorms without requiring claims.

Insurance savings: Most Colorado insurers offer 15-25% premium discounts for Class 4 roofs. On a $2,500 annual premium, that is $375-$625 saved per year. The Class 4 upgrade typically costs $1,000-$2,500 more than standard architectural -- so it pays for itself in 2-5 years through insurance savings alone.

Why Asphalt Shingles Work in Colorado Springs

  • Thermal cycling tolerance: Our daily temperature swings (often 40+ degrees between morning and afternoon) stress roofing materials. Modern asphalt shingles are formulated for thermal cycling, unlike some rigid materials that crack under repeated expansion and contraction.
  • Easy repair: Individual damaged shingles can be replaced without disturbing surrounding material. After a minor hail event, targeted repairs are often all that is needed.
  • Contractor availability: Every roofing crew in the Pikes Peak region has deep experience with asphalt shingles. Material is stocked locally and readily available even during peak storm season.
  • Color variety: Dozens of color options to complement any home style, from Victorian-era homes in Old North End to modern builds in Wolf Ranch.

Installation Process

A professional asphalt shingle installation follows a specific sequence that each step builds on:

  1. Tear-off: Existing shingles stripped to the deck. Colorado code allows a maximum of two layers, but best practice is always tearing down to decking
  2. Deck inspection: Plywood or OSB checked for rot, soft spots, and proper nailing. Damaged sections replaced
  3. Ice and water shield: Applied at eaves, valleys, and around all penetrations (chimneys, vents, pipes). Required by code in our climate zone 5
  4. Synthetic underlayment: Covers the entire roof field as a secondary moisture barrier
  5. Drip edge and starter strip: Metal drip edge at rakes and eaves, starter shingles along the bottom edge for wind resistance
  6. Shingle installation: Field shingles laid from bottom to top in staggered courses, secured with 4-6 nails per shingle per manufacturer specs
  7. Ridge and hip caps: Specialty ridge cap shingles installed along all ridges and hips
  8. Flashing: New step flashing, counter-flashing, and pipe boots at all penetrations
  9. Cleanup: Magnetic nail sweep of yard, debris removal, and final walk-through

Maintenance Tips for Maximum Lifespan

Your shingle roof is a $10,000+ investment. These simple maintenance tasks will help it reach its full lifespan:

  • Spring and fall inspections: Check for cracked, curled, or missing shingles. Look for granule loss in gutters (a sign of aging). Professional inspections catch problems you cannot see from the ground
  • After every hailstorm: Walk the perimeter and look for obvious damage. Call L&N Construction at (719) 355-0648 for a free assessment if you see anything concerning
  • Gutter cleaning: At least twice per year. Clogged gutters cause water to back up under shingles at the eave, which is the most common cause of premature edge failure
  • Tree trimming: Keep branches at least 6 feet from the roof surface. Branches scraping shingles accelerate granule loss, and falling limbs cause puncture damage
  • Moss and algae: North-facing slopes in shaded areas can develop moss, especially in neighborhoods with mature trees like Old North End or Ivywild. Zinc or copper ridge strips prevent growth without damaging shingles
